Success Doesn’t Prepare You for What Comes After.
I spent decades leading the organization that provided the operational excellence necessary to deliver the disruptive innovation that reshaped a global industry. Then I stepped away and discovered the question no one prepares you for.
Beyond Tide Pods
If You’ve Spent Your Life Building Something, this Conversation Is For You.
For more than thirty years, my identity was largely inseparable from my work.
As CEO of the company that enabled the technology behind Tide Pods, I lived in a world defined by rapid growth, strategy, partnerships, and constant forward motion. The work mattered. The outcomes mattered. The responsibility mattered.
Then one day, it all continued without me. We don’t talk enough about what happens in that moment.
Not the financial planning. Not the retirement checklists. The emotional reality. The loss of structure. The loss of professional identity. The quiet question that follows you long after the farewell speeches end.
That question became the reason I started writing again.
The Back Nine
You spend decades building something. Then one day, it moves forward without you.
When I retired after thirty-three years leading a company at the forefront of innovation, I expected relief. I expected freedom. I expected clarity. What I didn’t expect was grief.
Not grief in the traditional sense, but the quiet disorientation that comes when the work that defined your days no longer does. In
The Back Nine, I write honestly about what comes next for high-achieving professionals who are stepping into a new chapter of life. This book is about mentorship, about fairness battles that don’t end with retirement, about navigating a rapidly changing world, and about discovering that purpose does not disappear when a career ends. It evolves.
If you have spent your life building something meaningful and now find yourself wondering what the next chapter looks like, this book is for you.
Formulating Solutions
Before Writing About What Comes Next, I Wrote About How It All Began.
Formulating Solutions tells the story of how a chemist became an entrepreneur and how a small organization grew into a global leader in a multibillion-dollar market.
It is a practical account of what it truly takes to bring innovation to life. Inside, I share lessons on building strategic partnerships, protecting intellectual property, navigating global expansion, and positioning an organization for long-term success.
The updated edition includes additional insights drawn from decades of experience working at the intersection of science, business, and leadership.

A Life of Building and Reinvention
For more than three decades, my identity was somewhat inseparable from my work. I led the company that brought one of the world’s most recognizable consumer products, Tide Pods, to life, operating at the intersection of science, strategy, and leadership.
Over a forty-year career, I earned sixteen U.S. patents, was inducted into the Chicagoland Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, and had the privilege of mentoring leaders and building teams that pushed industries forward.
Today, I serve as an advisor, board member, and mentor to emerging executives. My work now focuses on a different challenge: helping accomplished professionals and emerging students navigate the transition that comes when they plan and enter their next chapter as it defines their evolution into something new.
Because success is not the final chapter. It is simply the beginning of the next one.
